Update:
August 2021
Our major purchase of the year has just been installed! We have invested in a columbarium in order to address the limited size of our site. This will increase our capacity of internment, and offer our community another option for a final resting place.
This columbarium has 30 niches (compartments), each with the ability to house up to two cremated remains, and capped with a bronze plaque for engraving. It is now available for purchase, including reservations for future use. Please see our page on Burial Information for more information. We would like to encourage its use as an alternative to the limited earth plots that remain.
This purchase was made possible by major financial contributions from the Squamish Lillooet Regional District Area C, the Pemberton Initiative Fund (SLRD and Village of Pemberton), the Pemberton Endowment Fund - Whistler Community Foundation, and the CN (Rail) Community Board. Thank you all for your generous donations!
Our last few chores of the season will be to get the fence coated in another layer of paint, and work on getting the memory board installed. We will also purchase some tools and maintenance equipment to stock the tool shed. Any fundraised money left over will be used to purchase benches, to be installed next year.

Update:
July 2021
We are making progress on our landscaping goals! We have had some shrubbery planted around the site, and taken possession of a donated lawnmower!
A huge thanks to the Pemberton Valley Nurseries for sprucing up our site! They donated plants, soil, and the labour to get it all done. Mugo pines and potentillas have been planted all along the front fence, and an assortment of shrubs, including a few lilac bushes, have been planted on the inside corners of the front of the site. This has greatly improved the aesthetics and provides a more welcoming feeling for our visitors. Of course, especially with the extreme heat we have experienced this summer, keeping these plants alive has been an ongoing task. Thanks to Nolan Den Duyf and Cold Creek Acres for providing us with a water tank for on-site storage, and to John Beks and the Pemberton Meadows Fire Department for keeping it full! The Walden family kept the plants alive, watering twice a day through the record-setting heat of June, and are committed to watering the plants for the remainder of the year.
We would also like to extend a huge thank you to Rob Meilleur and Arid Irrigation for their donation of a lawn mower! With the help of Linda and Dave Den Duyf of Sabre Rentals, Dave Chapman and Napa, and the Pemberton Lions, Rob made the necessary mechanical improvements and delivered to us early this month. Our neighbours Don and Sue are continuing to volunteer for lawn maintenance duties, and this new addition is going to make their job much easier.
Thank you to everybody that has helped tick landscaping off our list!

Update:
May 2021
Now that the snow has departed we are starting to complete some of the items on our 2021 to-do list.
We have installed two commemorative plaques on the inside of the gate pillars. The one to the right was gifted to us by the Miller family, and was originally commissioned by the Anglican Church in honour of our two local veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice in World War II. Given that Pat Wilson was one of the two brothers that donated this land for the cemetery, and that Ronayne (Ronie) Miller's immediate family members we some of the original trustees, it seems fitting that they both be honoured on site. We were able to track down the original supplier of this plaque, and returned it to them for refinishing. We are extremely pleased with how it turned out. We also commissioned a new, matching plaque that has been placed on the left pillar, in commemoration of the establishment of the site.
We would like to acknowledge the Pemberton Valley Supermarket for organizing, and to our pleasant surprise, donating the concrete barriers for the parking lot! These were delivered a few weeks ago as a necessary addition to providing safe access to the site (see photos below).
We plan on doing some landscaping to prove the aesthetics. Allen and Shelley Fraser of Pemberton Valley Nurseries have volunteered to donate plants, shrubs, materials and their time to tick this item off of our list.
Sandy Ryan and Whistler Welding will be taking care of the installation of the memory board for us, after the columbarium has arrived. The idea of the memory board is for people to commemorate loved ones not interned at the site. A small, 4”x6” plaque can be purchased, with 3 lines of text (more lines available at an additional cost), including name, dates, and an epitaph. Please see our website for more details, or contact us as legionbranch201@gmail.com, if you are interested in purchasing a plaque.
Dennis Collins of D. Collins Construction plans to finish off the tool shed, and we may be soon in possession of a donated lawn mower and weed eater. More details to come!
Our last item we would love to accomplish is the addition of a few benches to spread out around the site. We are hoping to fundraise enough money to purchase them this summer. Those still interested in donating to this project, please visit our website or contact us at legionbranch201@gmail.com for more information. Any donation will be extremely appreciated!
Again, a huge thank you to the very long list of individuals, businesses, and government organizations that continue to make this project possible! It has been a major undertaking that would not happen without the generosity of our amazing community!

-Installation of a Memory Board
-Plaques for the pillars to commemorate the site
-Concrete barriers to prevent vehicular accidents along the ditch
-Completion of the tool shed and purchase of maintenance equipment

Fortunately the generosity of our community has continued over the winter, and we have been able to both fundraise and collect donated items to work towards completion of this list.
We would like to extend a huge thank-you to the following for their monetary donations:
CN (Rail) Community Board
Pemberton and District Initiative Fund (SLRD and VOP)
Squamish-Lillooet Regional District Area C

Update:
October 2020 Wrap-up
It took a little longer than expected, but we have completed our goals on the Cemetery Enhancement Project tick list for the 2020 season. Over $50,000 was raised, and 30 businesses and 50+ volunteers came together with donations of equipment, materials and labour, to complete an estimated $200,000 worth of work!
A massive thank-you to a few dedicated individuals on the fencing crew that came back over 4 full days to complete the job, to those that found time during the work week to take care of the extra details, to those pouring concrete at 5:00 on a Friday night, and to the many individuals that showed up at 9:00am on a Saturday morning to get the site cleaned up and looking great!
We need to do another shout-out to Pemberton Concrete Inc. We had planned on hand-mixing for the fence post holes, but our new, local company contacted us and offered to work late nights, on weekends, and for free! They were extremely flexible and accommodating, making three separate deliveries to us! Thank you Lloyd Weightman, Tori Burwell, and Gord Menzel for making this happen.
A few more quick thank yous to Dean Matt and Matt Cladd Industries for arranging a roof for our shed, to Jody Atwater and JT Heavy Equipment Repair and Automotive Ltd. for grading the driveway and offering support for our columbarium in 2021, and to Eric Craig and True North Masonry for completing construction of the gate pillars.
One thank you we cannot fail to mention is to Don Murray and Sue Stearns. They have taken on the job of mowing the lawn, and kept the site looking tidy all year long. Thank you so much for keeping our grounds looking good!
As happy as we are with our work in 2020, there are still a few jobs left over for 2021. We are still fundraising for the following goals:
1 - Purchase a columbarium (for internment of cremated remains)
2 - Install a memory board (to commemorate names of those not interned at the site)
3 - Purchase a plaque to commemorate the establishment of the site (to be placed on the gate pillar)
4 - Purchase a few benches to spread out around the site
5 - Stock the tool shed with tools for maintenance of the site, and to perform burials
6 - Landscaping
For anybody interested in supporting this project, please visit our GoFundMe Page at the link below, or contact us at the Pemberton Royal Canadian Legion Branch #201, Box 182, Pemberton BC V0N 2L0.

Update:
Phase 4 - October 2020
Installation of Steel Fence
We aren't quite done yet, but what we have accomplished looks amazing! We had over 30 people come out to help with the most labour-intensive part of our project... putting up the fence... and with the aid of donated equipment and materials, we are getting close to completion.
Sandy Ryan and Whistler Welding signed onto this project after learning that we were searching for an indestructible, low-maintenance fence. A good quality steel fence seemed to be the solution, but out of our price-range. Sandy offered to work with our budget and provide what we were looking for, and has personally contributed countless volunteer hours to this project to ensure a high-quality job. We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from Sandy Ryan and Whistler Welding!
Installing the fence has been, and continues to be, a huge undertaking. We continue to be astounded by the generosity we have received from our community! In addition to so many that have already volunteered, a lot of individuals and businesses came together to make this phase of our project happen. This is a long list, but each of these individuals and businesses deserve mention! A huge thanks to the following:
Dennis Collins, of D Collins Construction, signed onto this project early on and has helped with every phase of the project. He measured and marked out our site plans for the road works and fencing, built the forms for our gate pillars, columbarium and memory board, organized the concrete, and is now busy building our tool shed. This was one of the last items on our to-do list and we didn't know if getting it built would be possible this year, but Dennis is now single-handedly taking care of the shed for us. We would not have accomplished as much as we have without him!
Sabre Rentals (Dave and Linda Den Duyf) donated a multitude of equipment, including two backhoes, compactors, augers, etc. It took two trips with truck and trailer to transport it all! Without them this job would have been next to impossible.
Pemberton Concrete heard through the grapevine that we were planning to hand mix, contacted us and volunteered to provide concrete free of charge, and is delivering over multiple trips. This saved us so much time and labour... we were extremely grateful to see the truck pull in!
Eric Craig and True North Masonry from Whistler has graciously built us stone gate pillars to frame the entrance and support our new gates. They will be covered with river rock once the fence is up.
We needed more crush to finish the job, so Twin River Gravel Co Ltd. once again donated material, and C.S. Jackson Heavy Equipment Service’s Ltd. very kindly delivered it for us. Coastal Mountain Excavations Ltd. donated lock blocks to finish off the driveway, and delivered free of charge courtesy of Rick King.
Rona Pemberton Valley Hardware has generously donated all of the material for the tool shed, after already donating filter cloth for our driveway earlier in the summer!
Other equipment donations include Glacier Creek Contracting (backhoe and JCB), Arlen Fitzpatrick brought his backhoe, and Halaw Contracting provided the all important outhouse!
The volunteers that gave up their weekend, some spending two longs days on site, to do the heavy lifting include:
Tanis Ayers, Francois Beaudoin, Wayne Binmore, Lesley Clark, Linda Den Duyf, Andrew Finnerty, Arlen Fitzpatrick, Jimmy Foon (insert real last name here), Dave Hellevang, Steve Hitchen, Chuck Hustins, Frank Ingham, Sonia Jakal, Cliff Lattin, Delores Los, Paul Martin, Sandy McCormack, Allen McEwan, John McMann, Judy McNolty, Vince Moule, Tanya Pasenow, Dave Peacock, Tom Quenneville, John Rekrut, Joe Robinson (Grizz), Dawn Ross, Sandy Ryan, Dave Walden, Krista Walden, Sam Weber.
And last but not least, a big thank-you to Grimm's Deli, McDonalds, The Beer Farmers, and Kristi King for keeping the crew fed and hydrated!
Stay tuned as we plug away at finishing the job, for photos of the finished product!

Update:
Phase 3 - August Long Weekend 2020
Roadworks - Construction of new driveways and parking lot
Our cemetery is now safely accessible to all members of our community!
After over a year of planning our new driveway(s)/parking lot is complete! This was a major undertaking that our community got for LITERALLY next to nothing. The generosity of the following businesses/individuals is difficult to put into words.
The volunteer drivers/operators that made this happen toughed it out in one long, hot, dusty day (and not all had air con). This job could not have been completed without these individuals giving up their long weekend to be here. Our community owes a huge thanks to Dave Walker and Sandy McCormack on the excavators, and Rick King, Ken Greenway, Greg Whittaker and Doug LeBlanc hauling the material to get the job done.
And of course this wouldn't have been possible without equipment and materials. Another huge thanks to the following:
Equipment Donations:
-Cascade Industries (Dave Walker) - Excavator
-Sunstone Ridge Developments (Cam and Tammy McIvor)- Excavator
-Coastal Mountain Excavations - Lowbedding and Trucking
-Ken Greenway Trucking - Trucking
-D. LeBlanc Contracting - Trucking
-Tonka Services (Greg Whittaker) - Trucking
-Sabre Rentals Ltd. (Dave and Linda DenDuyf) - Compactor
-Badger Transport (Jim Kernaghan) - Lowbedding
-TKT Contracting Ltd. - Trucking of crush
Material Donations:
-Pemberton Valley Dyking District - Pit Run Material
-Lizzie Bay Logging Ltd. Squamish Mills Ltd./ Triton Automotive and Industrial Ltd. - Culverts
-RONA Pemberton Valley Hardware - Filter Cloth
-Twin River Gravel Co Ltd. - Crush
Thanks to everybody on the ground crew for doing their part to make the weekend go smoothly, to McDonalds and Pemberton Valley Supermarket for providing coffee and lunch, and to John Wright and family for allowing us to access the site through their property! Stay tuned for an update in a weeks time as the finishing material is delivered and spread to complete the job, and for a soon-to-be-set date for installing the new fence! We are still looking for a few more dollars to make the finishing touches possible. Please check out our GoFundMe Page if you are interested/able to support this project! gf.me/u/x6wy34

Update:
Phase 2 - Spring 2020
Fundraising
The Cemetery Enhancement Project is going to continue moving forward this year. We feel that we can do so safely, and as we have already received considerable donations, we feel a responsibility to ensure this project progresses. We may not be able to complete the entire project this year, but our hope is to create the on-site parking and replace the fence by the end of this summer.
The original fence for the cemetery in 1935 cost $53.30, of the $63 raised by the initial 'Notice to the Public,' (see on our 'History' page). We are hoping to raise significantly more for this project!
A huge thank-you to our Donors that have already contributed:
Pemberton and Area Endowment Fund - Whistler Community Foundation
Pemberton and District Initiative Fund
Pemberton Valley Utilities and Services Committee
Squamish-Lillooet Regional District Area C
Walsh Restoration Services
Rotary Club of Pemberton
Pemberton Lions Club
Pemberton Women's Institute
Pemberton Legion Branch #201 - Poppy Fund
Many Individual Donors (GoFundMe and Mail In donations)
Another big thank-you to those businesses/individuals that have committed to the donation of equipment, materials and volunteer labour to reduce our costs.
We realize that, given the current economic situation, this is not the ideal time to be requesting donations, and that many are not in a position to support this project. However, for those interested in showing support and are capable of doing so, we would sincerely appreciate any financial assistance. We have a GoFundMe page gf.me/u/x6wy34, or, if donors prefer, we will also gratefully accept cheques or e-transfers - sent to the below information.
Mail to:
Royal Canadian Legion

Pemberton, BC V0N 2L0
E-transfer to:
legion branch#201@shaw.ca
Thanks in advance to any and all for supporting this project! The response from individuals/businesses in this town has been tremendous, and we are excited to work with everybody to see this project completed!
Phase 1 - November 16th, 2019
Tree Removal
In order to make room for a small parking lot and get vehicles off of the highway, the trees along the front of the property have been removed. A huge thank you to Vic Samuels for falling the trees, John Beks and John Cipola for hauling the material away, and the cleanup crew for making quick work of a big job!
We will spend the winter months fundraising and planning for the next stage of work to be completed in August.
Our Cemetery is receiving a site upgrade! The project includes:
-Improved driveway and addition of parking
-Installation of Columbarium
-Refurbishment of 'Memory Board'
-New fencing
-Construction of maintenance shed
-Landscaping
Please see bottom of page for specific plans and project rationale.
-Improved driveway and addition of parking
-Installation of Columbarium
-Refurbishment of 'Memory Board'
-New fencing
-Construction of maintenance shed
-Landscaping
Please see bottom of page for specific plans and project rationale.
Rationale for our upgrade project:
Unlike most community cemeteries that are administered by local governing bodies, the Pemberton Cemetery does not fall under the jurisdiction of either the Village of Pemberton or the Regional District. As as result, maintenance of the site has depended on a handful of community members, who have, for decades - and with little to no budget - volunteered their time and equipment to maintain the site. With our growing community comes an increased demand for space, accessibility issues, and safety concerns with highway traffic volume. This upgrade project is being planned to address these concerns, enhance the aesthetics, and honour our departed that lay at rest.
This project is scheduled to take place in August/September of 2020. We will be relying heavily on community volunteers/donations, and many individuals/businesses have already pledged their support. Anybody interested in being involved should contact Krista Walden at kjayholdings@gmail.com, or Tanis Ayers at the Pemberton Legion, at legionbranch201@shaw.ca.
In order to complete this project, our goal is to raise $90,000. Donations can be made to the Pemberton Legion, and will be very much appreciated!

Driveway/ParkingIn order to improve access and safety, the existing driveway will be widened and re-sloped, and will become the entrance. At the front end of the property a one-way road will be constructed with an exit at the north end, and will include limited parking on the inside of the ditch.
FenceA black, steel fence with concrete footings will be installed.

ColumbariumA columbarium is an above-ground structure designed to house cremated remains as a final resting place. One columbarium that can house up to 60 urns will be installed, and plans will allow for additional columbariums as needed in the future.
ShedA small storage shed for tools and equipment will be constructed.
|
Memory BoardA 'memory board' is designed to remember loved ones who aren't buried in the cemetery, by placing a small, commemorative plaque on the memory board.
LandscapingMinimal, low maintenance landscaping will complete the project.
